Deland Chan  |  Urban Studies

Deland Chan is the Assistant Director of Urban Studies for Community Based Learning and the Human Cities Initiative. She advises Urban Studies majors in the Urban Sustainability concentration. She comes from an urban planning and design background with project expertise in urban sustainability, transportation, and public space design. At Stanford, Deland teaches two project-based studios, Sustainable Cities and International Urbanization, where students collaborate with NGOs and government agencies on sustainability projects. She co-teaches the Defining Smart Cities seminar with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and also teaches design thinking and participatory design at the Stanford Institute of Design (d.school).

Kevin Hsu  |  Urban Studies

Kevin Hsu is Lecturer in Urban Studies at Stanford University and a scientist with Disney Research, presently based in Shanghai, China. He teaches "International Urbanization" "Defining Smart Cities" and an array of classes at the Stanford d.school. At Disney, he leads the Community Design research group, focused on the structure of neighborhoods that offer a high quality of life, and also spearheads efforts to integrate urban design practice with Energy and Transportation Planning. Kevin earned degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering (specializing in Atmosphere/Energy), International Relations and Earth Systems, all from Stanford. As head of Skyship Design, an educational design studio dedicated to crafting innovative experiences for students, he developed Norway's first MOOC for a global audience entitled "What Works? Promising Practices in International Development" and several other MOOCs, such as "International Women's Health and Human Rights" with Anne Firth Murray. He was part of a team that exhibited in the San Francisco Market Street Prototyping Festival in 2015.

Zhiyong Fu  |  Information Art and Design  |  Academy of Arts and Design

Zhiyong Fu is an Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of Information Art & Design at Tsinghua University. Dr. Fu received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Wuhan University of Technology in 1993, M.A. in 1996, and his Ph.D. degree in 2005 from Tsinghua University.  He is co-founder of Design Beijing Lab, which functions as a platform for research, planning, design, and experimentation on smart city and urban media. He was the main designer and speaker of the Smart City International Exhibition & Symposium at the China Millennium Monument Museum during  Beijing Design Week in 2013. He directs Design Now and Maker Space at Tsinghua University,  an open incubation platform for design-driven innovation and startups.

Nan Li  |  Construction Management  | School of Civil Engineering
Nan Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Construction Management at Tsinghua University, Beijing China. Dr. Li graduated from the University of Southern California in 2014, where he received a PhD degree in Civil Engineering and two Master degrees in Civil Engineering and Computer Science. He received the PhD Achievement Award and the Best Dissertation Award upon graduation. Dr. Li has published over 30 journal and conference papers and serves as an associate editor of Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering (JCCE) and a board member of the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC). He has recently been selected into the One Thousand Young Talents Plan in China. His research interests include informatics and intelligence for buildings and infrastructure systems, and urban and community resilience.
